Rectus abdominis
Also called: abdominals, six pack, core
The rectus abdominis is the long flat muscle running from the pubic bone up to the lower ribs — the one that shows as a six-pack. Its job is flexing the trunk and resisting extension. The visible segments come from tendinous bands crossing the muscle, and how many you have is genetic.
Abs anatomy
The rectus abdominis runs vertically down the front of the abdomen in two columns separated by the linea alba. Horizontal tendinous intersections cross it, and those bands are what create the segmented six-pack appearance. Their number and symmetry are inherited — some people have four visible segments, some eight, and no amount of training changes that.
Beneath and beside it sit the transverse abdominis, the deepest layer, which wraps around the trunk like a belt and increases intra-abdominal pressure when you brace. It does not flex the spine at all; its job is stiffness and stability.
The obliques run diagonally on either side and handle rotation and side bending. They are a separate muscle group with their own page.
Visible abs are overwhelmingly a body-fat matter rather than a training one. Training builds the muscle; whether you can see it depends on what is over it.

- The pubic crest and pubic symphysis.

- The costal cartilages of ribs 5–7 and the xiphoid process of the sternum.
What the abs does
- Trunk flexion — curling the ribcage toward the pelvis.
- Posterior pelvic tilt — tucking the pelvis under, which is the same motion from the other end.
- Resisting trunk extension — the main job during planks, carries and overhead pressing.
- Increasing intra-abdominal pressure, together with the transverse abdominis, to stiffen the trunk under heavy load.

How to train the abs

- Progressively overload the abs like any other muscle. Sets of 50 crunches build endurance, not size — add resistance instead.
- Include both a flexion movement (cable crunch, leg raise) and an anti-extension movement (plank, rollout). They are different jobs.
- Heavy squats, deadlifts and overhead pressing already train the core isometrically. That is real volume; count it.
- You cannot spot-reduce fat from the stomach. Abdominal training builds the muscle; visibility comes from overall body composition.
Stretches and mobility
Cobra stretch
Lie face down and press the chest up with the arms, keeping the hips down. 20–30 seconds.
Standing backbend
Hands on the lower back, gently extend backward. Small range — this is a stretch, not a limbo contest.
Common mistakes
Training abs for fat loss
Crunches do not burn fat from the stomach specifically. Spot reduction is not how fat loss works. Train abs to build the muscle, and manage body composition through overall diet and activity.
Never adding resistance
Doing more and more unweighted reps stops producing adaptation quickly. Cable crunches, weighted rollouts and hanging leg raises let you actually progress.
Turning leg raises into hip-flexor work
If the pelvis never leaves neutral, the hip flexors are doing the whole movement. The abs only engage once you start curling the pelvis toward the ribs.
Abs FAQ
- Are there upper and lower abs?
- It is one muscle, the rectus abdominis, but it is not entirely a myth. The muscle has regional innervation, and research shows that some exercises produce more activity in the upper portion and others in the lower. You cannot isolate them separately, but including both crunch-style and leg-raise-style movements is reasonable.
- How do I get visible abs?
- Reduce body fat. The rectus abdominis is visible when the layer of fat over it is thin enough — for most men that's roughly the low teens in body-fat percentage and for most women meaningfully higher. Training the abs builds the muscle so it shows more clearly, but it does not remove what is covering it.
- How often should I train abs?
- Two to three times a week, treated like any other muscle, with resistance and progression. Daily high-rep ab work is mostly endurance training and produces very little additional growth.
- Why can I see only four abs?
- The number of visible segments is set by the tendinous intersections crossing the rectus abdominis, and that is genetic. Some people have four, some six, some eight, and some have visibly asymmetric ones. Training cannot change the pattern.
- Are planks or crunches better?
- They train different things. Planks train the abs to resist extension, which is what they do during heavy lifts and carries. Crunches train trunk flexion, which is the muscle's concentric action. A complete programme includes both.
