Prept vs Gymdex: Which Workout Saver Should You Use in 2026?

An honest comparison of Prept and Gymdex for saving workouts from Instagram and TikTok: platform support, extraction quality, set logging, and price.

Two phones lying side by side on a light concrete gym floor, a single black dumbbell between them, overhead shot

Gymdex and Prept both turn workout videos from Instagram and TikTok into a list of exercises, sets and reps. Choose Gymdex if you are on iPhone or Mac, want to dictate or paste workouts in, or want the app to generate a session for you. Choose Prept if you are on Android, save from YouTube, Pinterest, Reddit or X as well, or want to log weight and reps set by set while following the video.

Getting workouts in

Both apps solve the same first problem: a workout you saved on Instagram is a video, not a routine, and copying it out by hand is tedious. Share the post to either app and it reads the video and caption and writes out the exercises with their sets and reps.

Gymdex’s strength is the number of non-video ways in. You can paste a routine from Apple Notes, pick a photo from your camera roll or simply describe a workout out loud. If your coach texts you sessions, or you keep a notes file of old programmes, that is genuinely convenient.

Prept’s strength is the number of platforms. As well as Instagram and TikTok, it imports from YouTube (long videos and Shorts), Facebook, Pinterest, Reddit, X and Threads, plus screenshots and PDFs. It also shows you the extracted workout before saving, so if a creator mumbles an exercise name you fix it once rather than discovering it at the gym. We walk through each platform in our guides to saving workouts from YouTube and Pinterest.

What happens at the gym

This is where the two apps head in different directions. Gymdex treats your saved workouts as a library to browse, share and remix — including an AI workout generator that builds a session from your recent training, the time you have and the equipment available.

Prept treats a saved workout as something you are about to do. Tap Start workout and it walks you through one exercise and one set at a time. You log the weight and reps (or the time, for holds and intervals), and each set opens with what you logged last time, so the number to beat is right there. If you forget how the creator set up a movement, the original video jumps to that exercise in one tap. Finished sessions land on a calendar with the muscles you trained and an estimated calorie burn. If the progression side matters to you, our progressive overload guide explains why logging every set is worth the effort.

Planning your week

Prept has a weekly planner: drop saved workouts onto days, mark rest days, and check which muscles each day covers on a body map before you train it. You can also build named multi-week plans. Gymdex’s planning is built around generation — tell it what kind of session you want and it suggests one — rather than laying out a fixed week. Neither approach is better in the abstract: one suits people who already have more saved workouts than they can use, the other suits people who want to be told what to do today.

The verdict

If you are on Android, the decision is made: Gymdex isn’t available, and Prept is. On iPhone, ask yourself what you want after the save. If the answer is “share it, remix it, or get a fresh workout suggested”, try Gymdex. If it is “put it on my week and track every set”, try Prept — the free plan is enough to test the whole loop with a few TikTok or YouTube workouts.
