Neck
Sternocleidomastoid, splenius and deep cervical flexors
Also called: neck muscles, sternocleidomastoid, SCM
The neck is a layered group rather than one muscle. The sternocleidomastoid runs down the front-side and turns and tilts the head; the splenius group at the back extends it; and the deep cervical flexors hold the head in position. Combat and contact-sport athletes train it directly; most people do not need to.
Neck anatomy
The most visible neck muscle is the sternocleidomastoid, the cord running diagonally from behind the ear down to the collarbone and breastbone. Acting on one side it turns the head to the opposite side and tilts it toward the same side; acting together, both sides flex the neck forward.
At the back, the splenius capitis and splenius cervicis extend and rotate the head, working alongside the upper trapezius and the levator scapulae.
Deeper still are the longus colli and longus capitis — the deep cervical flexors. They generate very little force but are important for holding the head in a neutral position, and they fatigue easily in people who spend the day looking down at a screen.

- Sternocleidomastoid: the manubrium of the sternum and the medial clavicle. Splenius group: the nuchal ligament and the spinous processes of C7–T6.
- Insertion
- Sternocleidomastoid: the mastoid process of the temporal bone. Splenius group: the mastoid process and the transverse processes of the upper cervical vertebrae.
What the neck does
- Neck flexion — bringing the chin toward the chest.
- Neck extension — tilting the head back.
- Rotation of the head left and right.
- Lateral flexion — tilting the ear toward the shoulder.
- Holding the head stable against external force, which is the reason contact-sport athletes train it.

- The neck is the one body part where loading aggressively is a genuinely bad idea. Progress in the smallest increments available.
- Never use momentum or ballistic movement under load. Every rep should be slow enough to stop at any point.
- Direct neck training is worthwhile for combat sports, rugby and American football. For general fitness it is optional.

Stretches and mobility
Levator scapulae stretch
Turn the head 45° away from the tight side, then look down toward the armpit. 30 seconds.
Gentle rotation and side bend
Slowly turn the head to each side and tilt each ear toward the shoulder. No force, no bouncing.
Common mistakes
Loading too fast
The neck adapts more slowly than almost anything else you train, and the consequences of getting it wrong are worse. Adding 1–2 kg over a month is reasonable progress here.
Using bridges as a starting point
Wrestler's bridges place the entire bodyweight through the cervical spine. They are an advanced exercise, not an entry point, and most people should never need them.
Stretching a painful neck harder
Ongoing neck pain is not usually a flexibility problem. Aggressive stretching often makes an irritated structure more irritated. Get it assessed.

- Should I train my neck?
- It depends on your sport. For combat sports, rugby and American football, direct neck training is well established and worth doing. For general fitness and physique training it is optional, and the neck already gets some work from heavy carries, shrugs and squats.
- Is neck training safe?
- It can be, with light loads, high reps and a slow tempo. It is not safe done explosively or with heavy weight added quickly. If you have any history of neck injury or nerve symptoms, speak to a clinician before starting — this page is general information, not medical advice.
- What is the sternocleidomastoid?
- It is the prominent muscle running diagonally from behind the ear down to the collarbone and sternum. One side turns the head to the opposite side and tilts it toward the same side; both together flex the neck forward.
- Will training my neck help with posture?
- Strengthening the deep cervical flexors with chin tucks can help you hold a neutral head position more comfortably. But head position is driven mostly by how long you spend in one posture, so changing that matters more than any exercise.
