Prept vs Hevy: Workout Video Saver or Dedicated Gym Logger?

Hevy is a best-in-class set-and-rep logger. Prept starts from the workout videos you save. Here's how they actually compare, and when you might want both.

Two phones on a gym bench, one logging sets and one showing a saved workout video

Hevy and Prept get compared a lot, but they’re not really built for the same starting point. Hevy is a dedicated strength-training logger — a huge exercise library, detailed volume and 1RM analytics, and a social feed, built for people who already know their programme and want to log it precisely. Prept starts one step earlier: it turns the workout videos you save from TikTok, Instagram and YouTube into a routine in the first place, then lets you plan and log from there.

We build Prept, so take our side of this with a grain of salt — but Hevy is a genuinely excellent app at what it does, and we say so below. Details about Hevy reflect its public listing and marketing at the time of writing.

If you already know your programme, Hevy wins

Hevy’s core loop — pick an exercise, log a set, rest-timer counts down, repeat — is about as fast and frictionless as gym logging gets, and its analytics (volume over time, estimated 1RM, personal records) are built by people who clearly log their own lifting. If your training already comes from a coach, a spreadsheet, or your own programming, and what you want is the best possible logger, Hevy is a strong, well-earned recommendation.

If your training comes from saved videos, that’s where Prept starts

The gap Hevy doesn’t fill is the one before logging: turning a TikTok or Instagram workout into something with actual exercises, sets and reps. In Hevy, that’s manual — you watch the video, then type the routine in yourself. In Prept, you share or paste the link and it reads the video for you, including which muscles each exercise trains, then lets you drop it onto your week and follow along with the source clip a tap away while you log. See our workout video saver page for how the extraction step works.

Muscle detail vs. strength detail

The two apps also emphasise different data. Hevy’s strength is session-over-session strength tracking — is your bench actually going up. Prept’s muscle tracker leans the other way: which of 23 muscle groups you’ve trained this week, so you can spot the parts of your body your saved-video habit keeps skipping. If you want both, that’s a reasonable setup: extract and plan in Prept, and if you later want competition- grade strength analytics on a fixed programme, layer Hevy in for that.

Price and platforms

Both are freemium. Hevy offers a capable free tier with Hevy Pro unlocking extended history and analytics. Prept is free to start, with Pro unlocking unlimited saving. Both run on iPhone and Android, so platform isn’t the deciding factor here — what you’re logging from is.

Verdict

  • Choose Hevy if you already have a programme and want the sharpest possible logger and strength analytics on top of it.
  • Choose Prept if your workouts come from social video and you want the save, the plan and the log to be one app instead of a manual transcription step before you even open a logger.
